Cost is a practical part of choosing counselling. You may be wondering how much to budget each month, whether your extended health benefits will cover sessions, or whether online therapy costs less than seeing a counsellor in person.
According to the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) 2026 Fee Guide, recommended fees for individual therapy range from $140 to $175 for a 50-minute session, depending on the counsellor’s level of experience. Individual rates may vary based on training, specialization, and the type of therapy involved.
At TalkOnline Counselling, we keep our fees clear so you know what to expect before you begin. Let’s talk about it.
How Much Does Online Counselling Cost in Vancouver?
Several counsellors on our team offer 50-minute sessions between $160 and $168 plus applicable tax. Our founder, Josipa Katinic, offers 50-minute sessions at $262.50, reflecting her extensive postgraduate training and specialized clinical practice.
When comparing online counselling in Vancouver, cost is worth considering alongside therapist fit. The right counsellor should have experience relevant to what you are working through and an approach that feels appropriate for you.
We offer free consultations so you can ask questions, learn more about the therapist, and decide whether the fit feels right before booking a full session.
Why Do Counselling Fees Vary?
Counsellors bring different levels of experience, qualifications, and specialized training to their work.
Some therapists focus primarily on individual counselling. Others have advanced training in trauma, attachment, couples therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic approaches, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), or other therapeutic methods.
Session type matters as well. Standard individual counselling generally costs less than extended sessions, couples work, or specialized assessments.
For example, counselling for depression and anxiety may follow a therapist’s regular individual-session fee, while an assessment requiring several hours of interviewing, professional coding, and follow-up involves a different fee structure.
Does Couples Counselling Cost More?
Couples counselling often costs more than individual therapy because the work involves two partners, the relationship between them, and specialized clinical skills.
In British Columbia, couples and family counselling commonly falls within a higher fee range than individual therapy.
Our online couples counselling supports partners working through concerns such as repeated conflict, communication difficulties, emotional distance, betrayal, attachment patterns, and major relationship changes.
Because sessions take place virtually, online couples counselling in Canada also gives partners greater flexibility when work schedules, travel, childcare, or location make regular in-person appointments difficult.
The cost still reflects the counsellor’s time, training, and expertise rather than simply whether the session takes place online.
What Do Specialized Assessments Cost?
Some services require much more than a standard 50-minute appointment. Our adult attachment interview online, using the Dynamic Maturational Model, costs $2,500 CAD for the initial interview, including the cost of official coding. A follow-up feedback session is billed separately at the interviewer’s regular hourly rate.
The interview itself generally takes two to three hours, followed by professional coding and interpretation. This is a specialized assessment process rather than a regular counselling appointment, which is why the cost is significantly different.
Will Insurance Cover Counselling?
Many extended health plans provide coverage for counselling, but the amount and eligibility depend entirely on your policy.
Before booking, check whether your plan covers Registered Clinical Counsellors or Canadian Certified Counsellors and whether virtual appointments qualify. It is also helpful to confirm:
- Your annual counselling allowance
- Any per-session reimbursement limit
- Which professional designations are accepted
- How receipts need to be submitted
We provide the professional information you need for reimbursement, but your insurer ultimately determines what your individual plan covers.
Is Online Counselling Less Expensive Than In-Person Therapy?
Not necessarily. The therapist still brings the same professional training, preparation, clinical experience, and time to an online appointment. The difference is usually in convenience rather than the professional fee.
For someone seeking therapy for relationship issues, trauma support, attachment-focused work, or individual counselling, virtual sessions remove the need to travel across Vancouver and make it easier to attend from a private place that works for you.
